The three Rhinemaidens play at the bottom of the Rhine. The Nibelung dwarf Alberich appears from a deep chasm to woo them.
But the maidens mock his advance! He angrily chases them, but they elude, tease and humiliate him.
A sudden ray of sunshine pierces the depths, to reveal the Rhine Gold. Alberich asks the maidens what that is?
They reveal that of this gold a magic ring can be made! Which gives power to rule the world, if its bearer first renounces love.
The maidens think there is nothing to fear from Alberich. But he curses love, seizes the gold and disappears in his chasm.
